Simwami Primary School Books and Sports Equipment Project

On 1st August 2014, we were overjoyed when a cheque for €5,000 was presented to our charity by the executor for Rose Tighe’s estate, Kells, Co. Meath. This money was used to fund books and some basic sports equipment for Simwami Primary School, Southern Province, Zambia.

Simwami Primary School has 15 teachers and 484 pupils. The school serves a rural population where there is a high level of poverty. Many of the pupils have been orphaned by HIV and AIDS. The lack of books among the school children made learning very difficult. The very few books which were available were shared among the staff and pupils. Prior to receipt of the donation, there was no sports equipment in the school.

This project enabled us to provide a number of books which could be shared among the children at each level. The money also enabled us to buy some basic sports equipment so that recreation time will be more enjoyable for the children. This has made an enormous difference to the school, by greatly improving the learning environment and also by raising the morale of both pupils and teachers.

A group of six OVO committee members organized the purchase of the books and sports equipment. The group was made up of Belinda Simpuki, Maureen Kanini, Michelo Patrick, Lucky Kabilika, Fr. Michael Walsh (M. D.) and Sr. Macrina Lyaunda (Project Manager). The books were bought in Choma and the sports equipment in Lusaka.

There was great jubilation when the items were delivered to Simwami Primary School by the above team on 23rd of September 2014. The excitement among the pupils and teaching staff as they welcomed the group is evident from the photos. There was spontaneous running with the new balls to the grounds to play netball and football in their new sports attire.

The pupils sang in thanksgiving to the donor and to all who were involved in delivering the project.

Sr. Macrina Lyaunda (Project Manager) sent an email message to express gratitude on behalf of the school management for providing support to these children. She also provided a summary of the expenditure and scanned copies of receipts for all the purchases.
