Mwapona Community School Update – December 2013

Mwapona school’s pupils and staff were very proud of the level of success achieved by its pupils in 2013. Fifty of the sixty pupils who graduated this year succeeded in being offered places in secondary school. This was a great achievement for a school such as this, which caters for a very deprived community. The books and sports equipment purchased with Irish Aid funding mid-year provided a fantastic boost for the school. This was considered to be a major contributory factor in increasting the level of interest and enthusiasm among children and teachers alike in their schoolwork.

Lack of adequate funding to pay for school fees and food programmes is an ongoing concern.

Update - 18th September 2013 - Happy day at Mwapona Community School

There was a great excitement in the school as the new sports equipment and attire were delivered. The children were uncontrollable, wanting to touch and play with the items, especially the footballs and basketballs. Because this was such a special day, they were allowed some extra time outdoors to enjoy the new play equipment before going back to class.

Irish Aid Grant

Our charity was delighted to be notified that a grant of €10,000 had been approved by Irish Aid for provision of school books and basic sports equipment in Mwapona Community School, Choma, Zambia. This school caters for children in a very deprived community. A total of 644 pupils and 10 teachers will benefit from the project. Books are in very short supply and in some classrooms, the only books available are those held by the teacher. Many of the children have suffered great personal loss as one or both of their parents have died from AIDS. Apart from the obvious benefits of providing books for the children, the availability of suitable recreational activities will be of enormous value in their rehabilitation. In order to avail of the grant, our charity must pay €4,285 (30%) towards the cost of the project.
